By the close of 1945 the success of his writing and the end of the war had allowed Montgomery to finish teaching at Shrewsbury. Holy Disorders was about to be published in Britain, The Case of the Gilded Fly had been brought out in America (renamed Obsequies at Oxford) and progress on his third novel, The Moving Toyshop, was well advanced. He moved to his parents’ house in Brixham.
