ABSTRACT

Sugarcane has been cultivated in this district for a considerable period. In the Gazetteer of Upper Burma and the Shan States it is briefly recorded that the cultivation was in patches. In the harvest season 1925–26 growers were selling their canes at Rs. 15 per 1,000 to an Indian who had set up a small factory near the District Bungalow at Pyawbwe. Drainage has also to be attended to, one or more deep surface drains being made in each plot. This is more necessary in the Pyinmana area. Fencing is frequently necessary but no item for the cost of this has been included. The practice of dealer varies. In some cases they visit the factory and weigh the produce were with a li brought for the purpose. In some cases the produce is sent to the godown without being weighed. In both cases, however, the produce is weighed in Pyinmana on the platform weighing machines.
