ABSTRACT

The game of Malaya is protected by an enactment which aims at preserving the fauna of the country from extermination. Big game can be shot by those holding licences to do so, or, under exceptional circumstances, by others in defence of their property or under special exemptions. The sportsman wishing to hunt big game in Malaya must first obtain a licence to enable him to do so. Information regarding licences should be obtained from the State Game Warden. Owing to the denseness of the Malayan jungle it is absolutely necessary for the sportsman to be armed with a heavy rifle when in pursuit of large game. Big game in Malaya was generally be found in such localities that the first stage of one's jungle journey can be undertaken by boat. Trackers are a serious difficulty in Malaya. All game has to be followed up by tracking the spoor, and it is very difficult to obtain even moderately good men.
