ABSTRACT

It is always interesting to watch the course of opinion in the United States on grave insurance questions. We, in this country, are apt to take conservative views, to be governed by “insular prejudices” our neighbours say, and although we are sometimes ahead of other countries in popular movements there can be no question but the American mind is broader, and its tendencies more consistently in the direction of progress and development. This has been evidenced again and again, and therefore it is natural that before taking any fresh step, – any “new departure” in the slang phrase of the day, – we should ask whether America has tried the experiment and, if so, with what results?
