ABSTRACT

‘The aspiration of the United States to absorb the whole of North America is no secret.’ – So writes the London Times, commenting upon the recent Russian treaty; and then goes on to show how it may be that British Columbia and Canada, having first become an independent power, may yet be connected with the Western Republic. When the purchase of Russian America was first hinted at, it was generally regarded as a bargain of questionable expediency, but as soon as it was officially announced, authors took down their maps and saw that it was theirs as a matter of course. Of course the farthest point westward, and the highest point heavenward must belong to the United States of America. There is not much doubt that, before many years have rolled on, the American Home Missionary Society will include in its diocese the entire continent of North America.
