ABSTRACT

Despite the special nature of both the texts and the music of the Ziegler/Bach cantatas and Ziegler’s role as Bach’s only female librettist, representations of Ziegler in the Bach literature of the past 50 years have often been ambivalent. Ziegler has first of all suffered from neglect, receiving little detailed scholarly attention either in literary studies or in musicology. The fact that the present volume provides the first in-depth study of the Ziegler cantatas or of Ziegler herself serves to highlight this state of affairs.
