ABSTRACT

On 6 June, the performance of Cutlack provided 11s to Henslowe, proving to be slightly more profitable than Jew and marginally less profitable than Titus had been over the previous two days. For a lost play, the subject matter of Bellendon seems well established, as scholars generally agree that the title refers to a character named "Belin Dun", in recollection of the medieval thief known simply as Dun. Hamlet enlists a troupe of travelling players to perform The Murder of Gonzago before the King at Elsinore because he believes the play to be topical. Short printed no fewer than fifteen titles in 1594, as well as reprints of at least two of these titles, suggesting a quick turnover rate, so it is likely that A Shrew was at least laid out and possibly already in print when a play with a very similar title was being billed for performance a mile outside of London.
