ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the coping methods, such as "Sanctification of Nature", which brought forth a new understanding of transcendence within the framework of the project "Meaning-making coping". It investigates the role of culture in the use of religious and spiritually oriented coping methods. The chapter presents some relevant approaches to the definitions of religion/religiousness, spirituality, and transcendence. The religious coping (RCOPE) items were modified for use, because one of the purposes of the conducted qualitative and quantitative studies has been to investigate the use of meaning-making coping strategies in cultural contexts where religion is not an integrated part of people's life. RCOPE focuses not only on the positive dimension of religious coping, but also considers the potentially dysfunctional forms of religious coping-as required by a spirit of comprehensiveness and scientific openness. The chapter examines whether cancer patients in different cultural settings have used any of the religious coping methods in RCOPE.
