ABSTRACT

Breastfeeding mothers with Multiple sclerosis may be aware of the familial risk to their child of developing symptoms so may be determined to breastfeed for as long as possible. Mothers with asthma may be keen to breastfeed exclusively for six months to protect their baby from the chronic condition from which they suffer. Medication to treat depression is not a reason to suggest cessation of breastfeeding, which may be the only thing a mother feels she is able to achieve successfully at that time. Excessive use of acute treatments for migraine is associated with medication-overuse headache which may be daily. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) fluctuates through cycles of remission and relapse controlled by medication and surgery, including temporary or permanent stoma formation. Twenty five per cent of females with IBD will conceive after their diagnosis. Symptoms are hard to define and it is a diagnosis of exclusion.
