ABSTRACT

The reuse of qualitative datasets will increase as more qualitative data archives become available and more funders require the availability of sharing qualitative findings for reuse in order to maximize the value of the data for the public good. Secondary qualitative data analysis can also help in the health-care arena to expedite the translation of qualitative findings to provide evidence-based practice to improve patient care. Theoretical coalescence is one method that researchers can use to reanalyze their datasets to develop qualitative theory or conduct a concept analysis. Qualitative researchers should contact institutional and repository representatives at the earliest stages of planning. In publishing their secondary qualitative analyses, researchers need to be attentive to describing the specifics of not only their secondary analyses but also the primary studies. Faculty involved in teaching qualitative research methods courses in PhD programs need to include content on secondary qualitative data analysis in their syllabi.
