ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses secondary qualitative analysis raises ethical concerns regarding informed consent and confidentiality in reusing qualitative data which along with perspectives from qualitative researchers and consumers on the issues. Qualitative researchers are beginning to address the issue of secondary analysis in their informed consent. Confidentiality is another pertinent ethical issue in qualitative secondary analysis. A delicate balance is needed between researchers honoring their promise of confidentiality to their participants and at the same time retaining the usefulness of the data for future reuse by other researchers. L. J. Hardy, A. Hughes, E. Hulen, and A. L. Schwartz warn that highly confidential and sensitive narratives from vulnerable populations participating in Community- Based Participatory Research required extra data management practices to protect the participants. A project-specific protocol was developed to strengthen trust between the researchers and project partners regarding concerns of data sharing and risks that may occur.
