ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the design and development of Intercultural Communication and Engagement Abroad, the online course for international exchange students that is the main focus of this book. The theoretical underpinning and the pedagogical approach that was adopted are explained. Details are also provided about the various components of the course and the evaluation scheme that was employed in the first offering. Appendices include the course syllabus and rubrics that were developed for the activities (discussion forum, fieldwork, reflective essays).

In this chapter I introduce Intercultural Communication and Engagement Abroad, the elective, credit-bearing, fully online course that I developed for international exchange students from my university to take while they are in their host country. After explaining the rationale for the intervention, I describe the theoretical foundation and related pedagogical approach, learning targets, core themes/issues, learning material and activities, the eLearning component, and the evaluation scheme. Related appendices are provided at the end of the chapter (the course syllabus, rubrics for all graded components).
