ABSTRACT

Lessons learned: optimising study abroad through online intercultural education

Chapter 9, the concluding chapter, discusses the lessons learned through the development, teaching, and evaluation of Intercultural Communication and Engagement Abroad and explains adjustments that have been made in subsequent offerings. After briefly describing the current curriculum, which includes an intercultural-global citizenship project, pedagogical advice is offered in relation to specific course components and, more broadly, online intercultural education in study abroad (e.g. the mentoring process). Although the book largely centres on second language speakers of English from Asia who participated in an international exchange programme, the lessons learned have broader implications for the use of technology in study abroad programming.
