ABSTRACT

This chapter elaborates on the three components of urbanisation; that is, the old towns, the new towns and the new rural communities. The old towns refer to existing urban districts, some of which were established long before industrialisation. The development of old towns should focus on renovation. Generally located in the suburbs, new towns may have evolved from industrial parks, high-tech parks, start-up hubs and logistics parks. With numerous factories and infrastructure in place, these areas have great development potential. New rural communities with Chinese characteristics are emerging everywhere. In many places, they are built on the basis of natural villages by renovating old houses, or on open land near original natural villages. The employment situation in new rural communities varies and depends on the locality. The chapter discusses how to fund the construction of public facilities during urbanisation.
