ABSTRACT

As with all design and technology products children need to learn to observe and evaluate existing environments, identify and suggest ways for improvement, and then plan and carry out their ideas. Additionally they are expected to evaluate the success of their work. This chapter considers an approach to help children observe and analyse their surroundings, followed by examples of how children might plan and carry out improvements, initially in very familiar environments such as their homes and classrooms and then in increasingly unfamiliar localities.
