ABSTRACT

Work is a central part of identity for Americans, including trans* people. Similar to females, discrimination, harassment and unemployment are particularly salient for trans* people. The US Transgender Survey garnered an impressive nearly 28,000 responses to their online survey over the course of 34 days during the summer of 2015. They found that among those who had been employed in the previous year, 30 percent had experienced some form of discrimination in the workplace during that year. 77 percent of the employed respondents had taken one or more actions to avoid the transphobic discrimination. Unsurprisingly, people of color faced higher rates of workplace discrimination and harassment. Healthcare, eldercare, and end-of-life decisions can be difficult to negotiate or even contemplate in general, but stigma, incompetence, and discrimination make each of these areas that much more fraught with anxiety and concern.
