ABSTRACT

Walk-around stories allow the viewer to move around in a fully three-dimensional world. The ability to look in all directions as well as move freely in the virtual space. Questions of ethics around recreation, accuracy and truth invariably come up in conversations about Emblematic Group’s work. While there is no way to know whether the recreated scenes are precisely accurate, it seems safe to say that they are as accurate as possible, relying on police records of the scene, audio of the calls, and witness testimony. Volumetric capture is a much more expensive, time-consuming and post-production intensive process than recording and editing 360 video. The only time the viewer’s placement changes are when they are teleported from inside the prison cell to outside. At each location the team had a limited time to capture all the scans needed for the Matterport system to assemble a full three-dimentional image of the place.
