ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how one audio designer approaches designing video game audio and delves deeper into two case studies on sound-centric projects by focusing on the immersive audio components rather than the visual elements. Many filmmakers begin with an audio track, editing together the audio onto a timeline followed by the visuals serving to complement the audio. Hallelujah VR is a music-focused virtual reality experience featuring an acapella version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” arranged and performed by singer and composer Bobby Halvorson singing five different acapella parts, recorded separately, and placed in the round. The choir that comes in toward the end of the song was recorded with lavalier microphones on the first row of singers. Additional audio channels offer the ability to lock sounds to head, for example, playing mono or stereo sound to the viewer in addition to the rotation-responsive spatialized sound.
