ABSTRACT
Designers need to establish an understanding of the community and the specific site before developing design recommendations. This chapter presents methods to observe, document, and understand human perception and behavior in the outdoor environment. Methods beyond the typical site inventory and analysis processes used by professionals are discussed. The application of these methods to various scales and project settings as well as their incorporation into different stages of the design and planning process are explored.
