ABSTRACT
An important but often overlooked step in understanding the needs and desires of existing and potential users of outdoor environments is to ask them. This chapter provides an overview of how community engagement can be incorporated into various stages of the design and planning process. Background on the evolving role of community engagement in planning and design professions and governmental obligations for citizen review is provided. In addition, the benefits and challenges of community engagement as well as community participation strategies are examined.
