ABSTRACT

Understanding how environments can facilitate and encourage the use by all persons is important for designers. Inclusive and exclusionary environments, legitimate and illegitimate uses and users, and the intentional exclusion of certain groups of citizens in public spaces are discussed. A brief overview of the legislation and design guidelines addressing the needs of people with disabilities is presented along with the legal responsibilities of designers. The chapter does not provide specific design guidelines but instead provides information on where to find that changing information. In addition, how designers can surpass requirements and create places that respect, reflect, and represent everyone's needs and rights to experience the outdoor environment are discussed.
