ABSTRACT

Gender disparities and gender equity in the use of public spaces and outdoor settings warrant attention and continued research. This chapter introduces the ways in which gender and gender identity shape people's use and perception of places. Related terms, the history of gender bias, and social changes and their relationships to gender are introduced. Research and design practices related to gendered experiences are presented and discussed along with spatial design implications. Using information from this chapter, planners and designers can begin to create places that are both gender inclusive and more sensitive to gender differences, resulting in a more equitable and supportive outdoor environment.
