ABSTRACT
Linguistic variation in geographical spaces is the main focus of this chapter. Among the topics covered are dialects, pidgins, Creoles, and lingua francas. The related themes of bilingualism, multilingualism, diglossia, language contact, borrowing, and code-switching are discussed and illustrated with concrete examples. Finally, the relation of dialect speech to standard languages is explicated, along with the changing definitions of literacy in online communication contexts.
