ABSTRACT

This chapter details how problem solving is a natural and intrinsic element of drama and how dramatic techniques can be a vitalizing and energizing force to elementary social studies. The chapter examines the utilization of drama, role playing, simulations, field trips, and service learning in the elementary classroom. If drama is to be effective in elementary social studies, teacher has to first feel comfortable with it. Elementary teachers who have a stronger sense of allowing students to experience social studies in the classroom are going to add suspense and excitement to their teaching. Perhaps the most familiar of social studies dramatic techniques is simulation gaming. Simulation games have become part of the culture. Fantasy simulations are played out recreationally by young people worldwide and there are many well-known computer games that are simulations. Dramatic techniques are almost always involving. In almost every type, a variety of problem-solving opportunities occur.
