ABSTRACT

This chapter details everything from basic software and hardware uses in the early primary grades, to more advanced uses of contemporary technology resources for more proficient students. It is important to remember that technology serves as a tool for instruction and should only be utilized to supplement or enrich the curriculum. The chapter examines several of the challenges and opportunities that are presented by incorporating instructional technology into the elementary classroom. National Council for the social studies, the largest organization dedicated to social studies in the US, also has issued standards, bulletins, and position statements that specifically highlight the importance of integrating technology into the social studies curriculum. As technology becomes more and more connected to daily life and the business world, skills in understanding these devices and their implications become a critical aspect of being an effective citizen in the digital era.
