ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the social studies curriculum and the elementary teacher's role in character education, the development of values, and the cultivation of attitudes. While values education and character education will always be controversial, the necessity of effective democratic values and character education elements in social studies cannot be denied. Teachers want students to develop high moral character and grow to exemplify civic virtue, which is the central element of good citizenship. Character education involves the development of moral and civic virtue. This means that teachers are involved in developing the value systems of their students. Values have a close relationship to our personal worldview. They have an impact on decision-making ability and especially on every aspect of evaluation. The goals of character education include establishing life patterns and personal codes of behavior that include qualities such as integrity, belief in self and others, responsibility, and honor.
