ABSTRACT

I went to a training session at one of our superintendent conferences and this idea of a marriage relationship between the BOE and the superintendent was its model. It is dead on in many respects. From the courting phase, when you are interviewing for the position, to the proposal when you are offered the position, the prenuptial agreement also known as the severing of service portion of your contract, the marriage when the BOE appoints you to the position, the honeymoon period of everything being new to you and new to them with you in the chair, anniversaries when you do your annual performance reviews/evaluations, major investments and joint lifestyle decisions known as the annual budget, to your divorce and/or death in mostly symbolic terms when you retire or actually die. Sorry, didn’t mean to be so dark with that last observation; but, truth be told, this is a very demanding position, and especially if genetics, your own physical shape, and/or the stress get out of whack, it can and does lead to death sometimes.
