ABSTRACT

Aside from crusaders being insufferable, their effect is almost always short lived and in the end, not very useful except for immediate, short-term gains. It is true that from time to time you will have to push certain things or approaches, or stand up for something. Be careful, it requires time away from everything else. When I first became a superintendent our district was 0.0 in terms of using web based interaction. I undertook, as part of my vision, to make our district enter the 2.0 world. The success was uneven but in the end steady. However, I noticed when I started observing teachers they were desperately using technologies that they were uncomfortable with and worse, did not plan out how to engage with. I had to constantly remind teachers that it is always about good teaching first and foremost and integrating and taking advantage of increasing student engagement, which is the point of good teaching in the first place. Though we continued to push on with the 2.0 conversation and conversion, it always was in the context of great teaching.
