ABSTRACT

The life of a superintendent is exciting, empowering, important, and, if you are not careful, lonely. Balance is central and not a complete answer. The simple truth is that to be good at anything you have to commit to the actual work, and this is a choice. Those in your life with whom you share love, laughter, and tears demand time and commitment. Prioritizing the time you have is a must. Many times that balance is precarious at best and often can appear non-existent. Unfortunately, most of us only understand this when we have a setback and stumble. The lucky survive and grow from the experience; others die or fall out of the profession. Without the safety of tenure or unions, the superintendent is a free agent that must look out for their interest to give the most that they can to the calling.
