ABSTRACT

Here are the indisputable facts in becoming a superintendent: 1) You are the highest-paid school employee, your bosses do their job for free (board of education); 2) your hours of work are 24 hours per day, 365/366 days per year; 3) when you are on vacation it just means you are away from the office but attached by your smartphone, that, yes, you are required to answer; 4) when you hear “hey, that’s why you get paid the big bucks” everyone means it; 5) you are a position, not a person, to everyone but your family (I hope!); 6) there is no tenure for superintendents, nor union membership protection; 7) due process is only as good as your contract; 8) your contract is your lifeline to your employment and is in the hands of community volunteers who are elected by a public.
