ABSTRACT

Study tactics can be broadly grouped into four categories, listed by order of effectiveness: retrieval, planning, recording, and text marking. Planning tactics include deciding in advance how, when, and where to study. Although one of the most important sets of skills for academic success, teachers often incorrectly assume students know them. If that student were to begin self-quizzing with regularity, research suggests that their class ranking would improve by about 26 students. Whether preparing for a test or completing an assignment, the tactics that students employ learning on their own largely determine their academic success. In general, the effectiveness of study tactics is linked to the extent to which they require students to think deeply about content. Text marking is the most popular and least effective category of study tactics. It includes activities such as highlighting, underlining, and circling words and passages.
