ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book argues that diversity must be paired with a deep appreciation for and commitment to racial equity and anti-racism. Some forms of discrimination, like the division of labor, are not created by schools even if they may help to reproduce them. At 15 years old and a high school sophomore, Pedro is in a mix of class levels, college-prep for mathematics and English and a smattering of basic courses in science and others. As educators forge ahead with tackling race and racism in schools, several challenges regarding race are important to keep in mind. Racism in education is a structured condition that many, if not most, students of color experience. Racism within color-blind ideology is not really about racism as a social problem, but it is portrayed as a deviance from a norm assumed to be racially equal.
