ABSTRACT

In order for an engagement programme to be effective it is crucially important that an organisation has a sound understanding of the formal and informal processes in play, and that it focuses on how and when to engage. There are occasions when organisations seek clarity on particular issues and there are two formal processes available to them: they can use Parliamentary Questions, and the Freedom of Information Act. There are many stakeholder activities that support Government action and the legislative process, and that inform policy debate and allow scrutiny of government decision-making. There are many opportunities for an organisation to engage with its stakeholders in an informal environment, and these complement the formal processes used by Government to consult on policy issues. Engaging in the Government's formal processes, then, raises the profile and credibility of an organisation with decision-makers, in addition to providing an opportunity for relaying its key messages further afield.
