ABSTRACT

An average Indian in contemporary India could then very well imagine that businesses in India would be behaving responsibly and pursuing their social and public obligations with élan. Business practice was veering into the world of modern corporate social responsibility (CSR): a world of voluntary codes of conduct for employee well-being, supply chains, environment, and voluntary disclosures, a world of audits, monitoring of compliance to codes and ranking of companies and countries on responsibility practices, a world of partnerships with civil society organisations to provide well-being and development to areas far and near to the business. From the review so far it is evident that in talking about CSR, literature talks about business and society, the responsibility of business and managers, the impact of business and managerial actions and so on. Finally this chapter presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book.
