Shibli Shumayyil’s Darwin book
Shibli Shumayyil, who studied evolution in France, from the wrong sources unfortunately, was the first to write extensively on it in Arabic. Shibli Shumayyil was the first and most outspoken Arab proponent of evolution. It was he who wrote the first detailed book on it in Arabic, but his approach to evolution was the same as Bishara Zilzal's progressivist materialism borrowed from Ernst Haeckel. Shibli was impressed by the careful and methodical observations and enormous collections of data by a century of Europe's greatest scientists, whose conclusions were supported by the rapidly expanding field of geology. Shibli uncharacteristically tried to deflect religious criticism by including God in a restatement of evolution theory in his little Haqiqa treatise. God is given center stage, creating and directing life through its successive stages of evolution. God can be known by the mind's grasp of science, the divine mind engraved in nature.
