ABSTRACT

From West to East, volunteerism is extending and emerging to become more structured and formal in Asia nowadays than ever before. However, informal volunteerism might have taken many other forms, names, or cultural meaning in many Asian countries in the past. This chapter briefly reviews literatures and describes volunteerism development in different Asian countries like Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, India, Nepal, and China as well as Hong Kong SAR. Two recent trends of volunteer development in Asia, namely “International Volunteering in Asia” and “Voluntourism” are also introduced and critically discussed to shed light on some consequences on the future development of volunteerism in Asia.
