ABSTRACT

In Chapter 10 we provide an in-depth discussion of the results of all four of our studies. We start by focusing on the conceptual issues of bullying, and then analyse the prevalence of bullying behaviours, including the the different types. The profiles of the victims and the perpetrators are described, as well as their age. We also analyse the bullying episodes, by considering their location, the number of athletes involved, the reasons for their occurrence, the transition to an older peer group, the prevalence of victimization and perpetration in different social settings, and the role of the coach in athlete-to-athlete bullying. We finally analyse who the victims speak with, who approaches the bullies, and who bystanders speak to about what they have seen. The coping strategies used by victims and bystanders are described, and also the consequences of bullying. These four studies provide different perspectives, and we compare their various findings. We articulate the major theoretical contributions and their applicability to the findings presented. After this, some main conclusions are summarized.
