ABSTRACT

In Chapter 9 we present findings from Study 4. This was a retrospective study in which nine elite athletes (one for each sport studied) were interviewed about their participation in bullying episodes when they were young athletes. We divide the participants into two groups: (1) those ex-elite athletes who considered that bullying did not occur in sports settings, and (2) those ex-elite athletes who considered that bullying happened and were involved. The results for group 2 are also organized into the three major themes: bullying circumstances, actors and implications. The narratives are analysed and major findings are reported and explored.
