ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book seeks to provide a sound understanding of the importance of basing practice and training design on the application of a set of powerful theoretical principles. It provides a basic introduction to the theoretical framework of ecological dynamics, which supports a constraints-led methodology. The constraints-led approach (CLA) that originated in the work of Newell is an integrative model that can also provide applied sport scientists, performance analysis with an understanding of how human beings develop or organize movement solutions. The book exemplifies the tools for practitioners to use to put a CLA into their own practice. It summarizes for readers how the main concepts in a CLA can underpin the quality of practical applications in a variety of sports, encouraging reflection and consideration within the context of each reader’s current experience and understanding.
