ABSTRACT

The September 30 Incident was an aborted coup d’état that took place in 1965. It shook President Sukarno’s authority and paved the way for the rise of Suharto, who went on to oust Sukarno from power and assume the presidency. In the process, members of the Communist Party of Indonesia were murdered en masse. Having maintained a close relationship with Sukarno over the years, Japan shifted to a policy of supporting Suharto through measures that included organizing a meeting of Indonesia’s creditor nations in 1966. In this way, Japan played an important role in launching Suharto’s Indonesia onto a path of economic development.
