ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a biography of mid- to late-19th-century singer Laura Harris. By 14 March 1864, in concert, and 22 March 1864, at the Boston Theatre, on which occasion the young lady again appeared as Lucia di Lammermoor, she was Laura Harris. Her operatic debut over, Laura turned to the concert platform, taking part in Brignoli's concerts at Washington on 26 and 28 April 1864 and Alfred H Pease's set at Brainard's Hall, Cleveland, with the tenor William Lotti, before continuing on to Columbus (27 May) and Indianapolis (1 June) with the same team. Towards the end of 1866 Laura moved on to France and concerts at Bordeaux, Lille, Arras and Amiens, then Baden-Baden, Ems, Rouen with Sivori and Hermann-Leon, and elsewhere. When she was first heard in this city under the name of Miss Laura Harris, 17 years since, she revealed the possession of a voice of uncommon flexibility and considerable brilliancy.
