ABSTRACT

Various extracts and summaries are published from time to time by the Stationery Office and it is sometimes possible to arrange for the relevant information to be extracted either by the Government Department concerned or by officers of the local authority. One of the most useful sources of information is the lists of factories which are maintained by the Ministry of Labour Factory Inspectorate. These give a very complete list of factories in the area together with the number of workers in each. The Regional Office of the Ministry of Labour is generally willing to provide periodically the total figure of employment in individual employment exchange areas. However, as the boundaries of these areas do not normally correspond with local authority boundaries, much less with particular industrial concentrations, the figures are likely to be less useful to the planner than those derived direct from the Factory Inspectorate records.
