ABSTRACT

The engineering industries, although they are very important economically and form a large part of the industry of most towns, are not of particular interest to the planner. With a few exceptions, they are not tied down to any specific location in a town or even in the country at large. Shipbuilding is the largest constructional engineering industry in the country with wide ramifications throughout many other industries which supply the fittings and constituent parts of the ships. The basic material used is steel in the form of rolled sections and plates, and these are generally received from the rolling mills by rail although water is also used for transport. Cables and wires for electrical purposes are produced in a very wide variety of types and sizes, ranging from fine wires of less than one-thousandth of an inch in diameter and covered with such materials as cotton, silk, etc.
