ABSTRACT

The industries in the metal goods group are concerned with the manufacture of the various metals into the smaller type of finished goods as distinct from the engineering and allied trades which fabricate metal on a larger scale. Although in domestic usage the word cutlery, generally refers to knives, forks and spoons, in the trade it is limited to articles which actually cut, such as knives of all kinds, scissors and shears. Forks and spoons are referred to as silverware or plated ware. Although the mechanical details of the manufacture of bolts, nuts, screws and rivets vary considerably, there is a strong family resemblance between the processes used and the type of factory housing them. Wire products include nails, netting of various kinds, springs, barbed wire, wire rope, woven wire gauze, wire brushes and cold forged nuts and bolts. Metal furniture is built up out of steel tubes and brass tubes, sheet, angles and other sections.
