ABSTRACT

The enormous and extremely rapid expansion of the larger towns was completely unplanned. The building up of a common architectural tradition is more difficult to achieve and may well take generations. The art of industrial architecture consists of first analysing the industrial processes from all points of view, taking into account such things as the flow of materials and products, the most efficient way of handling them, the best way of lighting, heating and ventilating the factory spaces. Factories are often the largest building masses in the modern town, and this has its problems in visual planning. Various specialists such as production engineers and industrial psychologists play their part, but on the architect falls the task of unifying and embodying their various skills. The Swiss have something to teach in interior design. It is the general practice there to paint all interior surfaces pure white and keep them very clean.
