ABSTRACT

The nuisance might take many forms such as noise, smell, dust, flies and vermin, untidiness, atmospheric pollution and river pollution. Modern boilers of adequate capacity with up-to-date instruments and methods of dust extraction will do much to lessen the nuisance. An efficient factory boiler and tall chimney causes far less pollution in relation to the heat provided than a collection of domestic grates burning the same amount of fuel. Mains electricity is now very widely used in industry as a source of power, and in many areas has completely superseded steam or gas engines. Heavy industries such as iron and steel works, shipbuilding, boiler making and heavy forging normally cause really gargantuan noises, but nobody dreams of objecting to them any more than they would to a thunderstorm. Concentrations of particular industries which may cause nuisance should gradually be broken down, as in smaller amounts they may be unnoticeable.
