ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises the dilemma facing regional input–output practitioners at this point in the development of the technique, and provides in the form of general statements the background and 'philosophy' of approach which resulted in the production of GRIT. The GRIT system is a response, taken in the context of the two dilemmas facing regional input–output, to the challenge to provide an operational method, free from 'significant error', for regional economic analysis. GRIT was designed for general use in analysis of a wide range of economies. It has been applied in this study to the regions of Queensland, and inevitably reflects therefore the Queensland and Australian data context. The concept of accuracy embodied in GRIT is one which implies 'freedom from significant error', rather than accuracy in detail. It implies also a holistic concept of accuracy that presents a representative overall picture of the regional economies concerned.
