ABSTRACT

From the first day of school it is important that people explicitly let their students and their families know that people are interested in knowing who they are, that they value who they are and that they care about each one of them. People need to make clear their belief that everyone is important, has a place in the community and that there is something people can learn from everyone. There are many ways to begin to build a strong sense of community and help children get to know one another, and learn about each other's backgrounds and families. 'There are three teachers of children; adults, other children and the environment', said Italian educator, Loris Malaguzzi, who developed the Reggio Emilia approach to learning, where young children are encouraged to explore their physical environment and engage in the self-directed tasks.
