ABSTRACT

Intercultural, interpersonal and life skills are essential for developing and maintaining healthy and positive human relationships within and across cultures. Good listening builds positive relationships, and is critical to problem-solving and conflict resolution. Effective communication is at the heart of healthy relationships. Intercultural skills include intercultural awareness, intercultural sensitivity and intercultural communication. Intercultural awareness is understanding our own and other cultures, and the similarities and differences between them. Intercultural communication is the way people communicate between different cultural and language groups. Intercultural communication requires knowledge about other cultures and skills to interact effectively with people from different cultures. It is important to develop intercultural skills as children engage in learning in virtual environments and on social media platforms. Intercultural skills are usually addressed in digital citizenship programmes in schools, and are essential skills for children and adults in our highly technological world.
