ABSTRACT

It is shown how two of the components of the claim/obligation relation distinguished in chapter 2 (that together make up what I call the “owing” relation) can be accounted for on the agency view. This is done by showing how respecting the value of agents requires acknowledging their power to generate exclusionary reasons with respect to certain matters and indirectly why persons wronged by a right violation have a special reason to resent that violation. It is argued that these facts together account for the relationality of an obligation.
